Philip Glass' Metamorphosis

Here is an excerpt (part 3 of 5) from Metamorphosis by Philip Glass, performed by Branka Parlic.

This is an example of a minimalist composition. Everything going on is very clear and perceivable. The simplicity of the music is what makes it so difficult to perform. I believe this is a much better interpretation of the piece than Philip Glass' original recording. Parlic teases out so much emotion with not much to work with.

Metamorphosis as a whole is a really unique piece. It is worth watching each part in order to see the whole thing unfold. Most music does not contain a concrete concept like this. A serious event occurs in this piece: a metamorphosis. Each part evolves from the previous part. The beginning lets the listener know that something serious is about to happen. It all goes down in parts three and four. Part five calms back down, and reflects on the whole process.

Are Metamorphosis and other concept pieces more artistic than any given hit single?
